These beautiful clay sculptures are easy to make and are a great process art activity for toddlers and preschoolers.

What you need:
- Clay (we used Crayola Model Magic)
- Cookie cutters or PlayDoh toys
- Skewers
What to do:
- It’s pretty simple. Use the skewer to help hold up the sculpture, but the child can sculpt away however he/she wants!
- Display the really cute clay sculptures!
What to read:
We read Look! Look! Look! at Sculpture by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. I’ve used this book before in my Young Artists class, but it’s the best book I’ve found about sculptures, so I keep using it. (If you have any sculpture favorite books, please comment below! I’d love to introduce some more great art books!)
My favorite part about the book is that it shows tons of different types of sculptures made by incredible artists. We can talk about really cool artists and their different kinds of really cool art when we look at this book!
I also passed around laminated images of sculptures by Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Donatello. The kids love to be able to hold pictures of art and comment on it. (They say things like, “Look it’s a lion, but it’s not a real lion.” And, “It’s kind of weird.”)
And that’s it! We read the book, talked about famous artists’ sculptures, and made our own clay sculptures!
