Gardening Books for Ages 0-5
What Will Grow? by Jennifer Ward
A simple book with pull-out pages all about how seeds have life inside them that will grow into a beautiful plant!
Goodnight Veggies by Diana Murray
A rhyming book about saying good night to a garden, this story is so fun!
Plant the Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson
This interactive book is so fun for toddlers and preschoolers because they get to plant the tiny seed and see what happens!
Hello World! Garden Time by Jill McDonald
This book reads more like nonfiction, with facts about gardens and growing plants. It’s easy to understand for curious minds!
Gardening Books about Grandparents
Grandpa’s Garden by Stella Fry
A picture book with more words, Grandpa’s Garden is about a grandson who learns the patience of gardening with his grandpa through the seasons. Included is a plan for making your own vegetable garden.
Grandma’s Garden by Joni Click
A sweet book about a granddaughter helping her grandma in her garden, this story teaches about how plants grow.
When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree by Jamie L.B. Deenihan
This fun book is about a grandma’s gift of a lemon tree to her granddaughter. While her granddaughter isn’t thrilled with the gift at first, it (literally) grows on her and – spoiler – the book ends with a beautiful city garden.
The Garden We Share by Zoe Tucker
This sweet story is about the life cycle of a garden. A grandmother and her granddaughter experience all of the seasons of gardening together, with the grandmother dying during the winter. The granddaughter heals and processes through gardening. Death is not explicitly mentioned in this book, and it may take children a little bit to notice it – if they notice it at all.
Grandpa Green by Lane Smith
This book by one of my favorite authors is about a grandson who notices that his grandpa doesn’t remember things the same as he used to – but his garden shows that -deep down- he’s still the same grandpa.
Gardening Books & Activities
Paint with Plants
Paint with plants as your paintbrushes. It’s that simple! (Check out here if you want to also tie this in with Vincent van Gogh’s art!)
Flower Science Art
Using parts of flowers collected from different kinds of plants (stems, petals, leaves, etc.), reconstruct the flowers to create new flowers and fun art. (Explore the artist Franz Bauer here for extra history fun!)
Wildlife Art
While this example is about jungle homes, you can modify it to create your own gardens with garden animals inside – bunnies, worms, birds, butterflies, bees, etc. Then glue plants from your garden on top. (If you want to explore Rousseau and jungle art, check out here.)
