Why Incorporate Sensory Play
Sensory play is a wonderful way to engage children in fun learning. Some of the benefits for children include:
- improvement of fine and gross motor skills
- increasing spatial awareness skills
- engaging creativity
- practicing social skills
- introducing literacy and language skills
- helping calm frustration.
Sensory play is open-ended and child-led. Encourage children to explore where they feel comfortable, and if they love a particular station, let them stay there and play. If a child runs from station to station and back again, that’s great too. The important part is to let the children lead, explore, create, and – most importantly – play.
Our Let’s Get Messy! Sensory Play Activities is a 4-week activity plan that provides ideas for 6 stations per week (plus bonus stations you can include every week). Please feel free to use all of the station ideas or some of them. Mix and match the stations, if you’d like. Also, caregivers can use this plan at home, in schools, in daycares, etc. It’s great for individual children, siblings, friend groups, and classes.
