I’m now dying to reread all of these. Seriously though. Did anybody else walk-run to the library on library day in elementary school to try and get the next book in The Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket first? Or was that just me?
90s Kids Read These Books
Great Illustrated Classics by various authors
These were so addicting, and I actually loved reading the classics in this series.
The Babysitters Club by Ann M. Martin
They’re adapting this series into graphic novels, and let me just say – they’re so amazing!
Magic Tree House by Mary Pope Osborne
Jack, Annie, the tree house, Morgan le Fay. Did you know new books in this series are still coming out?!
Goosebumps by R.L. Stine
These books are still coming out too! And they’re still being read by kids!
American Girl by various authors
The original American Girl books! My personal favorite was Kirsten with Kit as a close second.
Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey
Captain Underpants is super popular right now, but the boys in my fourth grade class literally FOUGHT over these. Personally, I wasn’t allowed to read them because…you, know…underpants.
Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary
My mom read this series as a kid and passed it on to me, but I loved going to the public library to get each book! It was still a popular series when I was in elementary school and now they’re releasing the books with new covers, making them new hits!
Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks
I saw this cover and immediately was taken back to when my mom read this series to my brother and me. Can I go back to when my biggest problem was my having to go to bed right at a cliffhanger?
Dear America by various authors
This was another series we RACED to get to first in the school library. And they’re still such great historical fiction.
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
Okay, raise your hand if this was required reading in elementary or middle school. But did you know it was a series of five books!?
Sideways Stories of Wayside School by Louis Sachar
Did you know that the author of The Wayside School series also wrote Holes? Another great classic we’ve all probably read (or at least seen the movie!)
Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
This was another required reading book for me. But then there was a super long list at the library for the sequel because we all wanted it. Thinking back, the school year must’ve ended before it was my turn to check it out.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson
Yep, there are two more books in The Herdmans series! The Best School Year Ever and The Best Halloween Ever. I highly recommend both.
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume
If you somehow missed reading this series, you missed out. Definitely go back and read them. They’re so funny. And, I mean, Judy Blume is a classic for 90s kids.
